Serenity Family Dentistry – Inlays and Onlays
At Serenity Family Dentistry in Charlotte, we specialize in providing our clients friendly service. If you think that you may need a dental crown or fillings, we may have other options to help repair your teeth through onlays and inlays.
Onlays and Inlays
When teeth are damaged or missing, your dentist may recommend a crown or to fill a cavity. But what happens when the tooth damage is too big to fill and too small to cap with a crown? When this happens, your dentist may recommend a dental inlay or an onlay. The procedures are close in nature depending on how big the tooth damage is.
When the tooth damage is too small for a crown, a dentist will need to drill excessively to accommodate the crown. An onlay fills that large cavity instead of using a crown. Smaller cavities can be filled with an inlay which also reduces excessive drilling.
Both procedures help restore teeth and can reduce more serious procedures like setting a crown later.
What Can I Expect In My Office Visit?
In your first onlay visit, your dentist and hygienist will go over the procedures. In this visit, they will prepare your tooth by cleaning and removing any decayed material. Like crowns, they will create a mold of the tooth to be repaired. Typically, you many need to wait a couple of weeks while the onlay is being made. Your dentist will install a temporary filling until your permanent onlay is ready. In your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and insert the onlay.
For inlays, your first visit will also include prepping the tooth. The dentist will then fill the tooth area with a hardening resin.
